Hello, and thanks for taking the time to visit the Rocking HP Farm. Web Site, Our farm consists of 18 acres and is operated by Rhonda and I, along with our three children, Lana, Luke, Krystle and our son in law Trent. The Rocking HP is located in the small community of Pecan Island, in the most southern part of Vermilion Parish, in Southwest Louisiana (Cajun Country). We are surrounded by marsh, with plenty of Alligators, fish, shrimp, crabs, etc., and also plenty of insects, like mosquitoes, and deer flies. It’s a known fact that if an animal can thrive here in the marsh, with the mud, insects, heat and high humidity they will do very well anywhere else. This brings us to the Katahdins. I did some research on different types of hair sheep that could survive these conditions. The Barbado hair sheep did well, but they were not heavy enough at weaning time, and a little spirited. After doing more research we decided to try the Katahdin hair sheep. The Katahdin’s do very well here and produce the weights we were looking for at weaning time. They are good mothers, plenty of milk, very fertile, high parasite tolerance, gentle, making them easy to handle, non seasonal breeders, lamb twin or triplets, and as a bonus they have a hair coat which they shed in the spring, they require no shearing and normally polled (no horns).

At the Rocking HP we have been breeding purebred Katahdins for a few years and after seeing how well the Katahdins do here, we decided to start raising some registered Katahdins along with our commercial Katahdins. Our flock, consist of 9 commercial ewes, 7 registered ewes and 2 registered unrelated rams. Our registered flock was purchased from Mark & Sara Dennis at the Country Oak Ranch. We are very proud of the sheep, professionalism, knowledge and friendship we received at the Country Oak Ranch. Our flock is well cared for, and monitored daily. A health record and production report is kept on each one. We will have both purebred lambs and registered lambs for sale in 2004.

We are now taking orders for spring lambs. Sorry all of our 2003 lambs are gone.

Our goal at the Rocking HP is to raise as good a Quality Katahdin hair sheep as possible, by culling our lambs and ewe flock very strict, selling only what we would keep for ourselves as breeding stock. Sending all culls to slaughter. Carefully selecting our flock rams, looking at his bloodline, size, genes, conformation, hair coat and EPDs if available. All of our sheep have A or AA hair coats. Promote the Katahdin hair sheep, assist other breeders and continue to make friends through the Katahdin Sheep.

We are proud members of the (SCKA) South Central Katahdin Association and the (KHSI) Katahdin Hair Sheep International. Elected as a board member for the (SCKA) at the 2003 annual meeting in Mississippi. Where we met some of the friendliest, outgoing and info sharing people. Seen some good quality animals on display / sale, and dined on some fine Katahdin recipe’s used during the Katahdin cook off contest. The Rocking HP will be the proud host of the 2004 annual meeting, field day, display/ sale, Katahdin sheep weight guessing contest and the Katahdin cook off to be held on June 11 & 12 2004. So come and join the fun and dine on some fine lamb, as you learn.

This alligator was caught in the ditch, that borders the pasture where our Katahdins graze daily at the Rocking HP Farm, where tame katahdins and wild alligators live. The alligator measured over 10 foot in length and weighted  well over 300 pounds. PIctured with the gator is our alligator hunting crew which harvested the animal, and are from left to right, Luke Harrington, David Veazey, Bryan Veazey, Brent Harrington, Gerald Veazey and Victor(chick) Conner. Alligator season normally takes place in September and runs about 30 days.
