Hello, and thanks for taking the time to visit the Rocking HP
Farm’s Web Site, Our farm consists of 21 acres and is operated
by my lovely wife Rhonda and I. The Rocking HP Farm is located
in Southwest Louisiana (Cajun Country) in the small community of
Meaux. We are just north of Hwy.14, mid way between Abbeville
and Kaplan. Prior to Hurricane Rita we were located in Pecan
Island, which is right along the coastline of Vermilion Parish.
We were surrounded by marsh, plenty of insect, high humidity and
lots of (mud). This brings us to the Katahdins. I did some
research on different types of hair sheep that could survive
these conditions. The Barbado hair sheep did well, but they were
not heavy enough at weaning time, and a little spirited. After
doing more research we decided to try the Katahdin hair sheep.
The Katahdin’s did very well there and produced the weights we
were looking for at weaning time. They are good mothers, plenty
of milk, very fertile, high parasite tolerance, gentle, making
them easy to handle, non seasonal breeders, lamb twin or
triplets, and as a bonus they have a hair coat which they shed
in the spring, they require no shearing and normally polled (no
horns)
At the Rocking HP we bred purebred Katahdins for a few years and
after seeing how well the Katahdins perform, we decided to start
raising registered Katahdins, and faze out our commercial flock.
For the last 5 years our flock is all registered 100% pure
Katahdin Breeding Stock. We are very proud of the ewe flock we
have assembled over the years. We have purchased some of the
best sheep we could find. Our ewe flock bloodlines are from the
Country Oak Ranch, Isle Navarre Farm and PTB Farms. Our Ram
Power comes from HBS Farm and JM Katahdins. These crosses are
really working well for us. We are very proud of the sheep,
professionalism, knowledge and friendship we received at all the
establishments listed above. Our flock is well cared for, and
monitored daily. A health record and production report is kept
on each one. Our lambs are ready for their new homes sometime in
June or July.
We are now taking orders for 2009 spring lambs. Sorry all of our
2008 lambs are gone.
Our goal at the Rocking HP is to raise as good a Quality
Katahdin hair sheep as possible, by culling our lambs and ewe
flock very strict, selling only what we would keep for ourselves
as breeding stock. Sending the rest to market, to make fine lamb
cuts. We carefully select our flock rams, looking at his
bloodline, size, genetics, conformation, hair coat and EPDs if
available. All of our sheep have A or AA hair coats. Promote the
Katahdin hair sheep, assist other breeders and continue to make
friends through the Katahdin Sheep.
We are proud members of the (SCKA) South Central Katahdin
Association and the (KHSI) Katahdin Hair Sheep International. We
attended our first (SCKA) annual meeting in 2003 held in
Mississippi. Where we met some of the friendliest, outgoing and
info sharing people. Seen some good quality animals on display /
sale, and dined on some fine Katahdin recipe’s used during the
Katahdin cook off contest. The Rocking HP was the proud host of
the 2004 annual meeting, field day, display/ sale, Katahdin
sheep weight guessing contest and the Katahdin cook off, held
June 11 & 12 2004. I strongly encourage anyone interested in
Katahdin hair sheep and a good time to attend a SCKA Annual
Meeting, and meet the great people associated with the Katahdin
Hair Sheep, it will be something to talk about.
Visitors Always Welcomed,

| This alligator
was caught in the ditch, that borders the pasture where
our Katahdins graze daily at the Rocking HP Farm, where
tame katahdins and wild alligators live. The alligator
measured over 10 foot in length and weighted well
over 300 pounds. PIctured with the gator is
our alligator hunting crew which harvested the animal,
and are from left to right, Luke Harrington, David
Veazey, Bryan Veazey, Brent Harrington, Gerald Veazey and
Victor(chick) Conner. Alligator season normally takes place
in September and runs about 30 days. |
