Enawoods
Farm was established on July 4, 1976. We like to think of it as
our bi-centennial home, a celebration of what made and makes our
country great. Truly our farm and home are a reflection of who we
are and what we believe in.
We “discovered” the
Katahdin breed of sheep after years of searching for just the
right animal to fit into our operation. We tried wool sheep, Gulf
Coast natives, and Barbados. We grow pine trees and needed an
animal that would help with weed control plus have a value in its
own. The Katahdin fits these criteria perfectly. It is a great
browser, is parasite resistant, and has heat tolerance to
withstand our South Mississippi summers.
As our operation has
evolved, we are turning more and more to the Katahdin breed as
people in our area are discovering the delicious flavor of
Katahdin lamb. At present we are raising Katahdins for the growing
meat market. We are also continuing to expand our breeder flock.
We have imported ewes from Canada and are upgrading our breeder
rams. We are enrolled in the voluntary scrappie program. Our goal
is to do everything possible to maintain a vigorous flock that
will meet consumer demands for quality, healthy, chemical free
meat.
It is our firm belief that
the Katahdin breed is perfect for the small farmer with a minimal
amount of land. With proper management an honest profit can be
realized. Furthermore with the influx of ethnic groups a growing
market for breeder and processed Katahdin lambs if developing.
Another project that we are
continuously excited about is the making or our lamb oil products.
The products are made from all natural ingredients and seems to
have a medicinal value for chapped skin and dry skin. Along with
the luxury lotions and massage butters in five different scents we
have lip balms in two different scents. Our products are listed
below and can be bought via email or telephone orders at present.
Dexter cattle “the little
cattle from Ireland” have also found a place at Enawoods Farm.
There is a demand for grass fed hormone free beef in our area. The
flavor and health benefits are well known. However most families
do not want to purchase an entire or even half of a standard 1500
lb. beef. This is where the Dexter cattle come into the picture. A
mature Dexter weights approximately 800 to 1000 lbs. This means a
dressed half is about 150lbs. This amount of quality beef can
easily fit into most freezers and budgets. Dexter cattle have an
outstanding flavor. They are low in fat and are naturally tender
and juicy.
