Bayou
Chene Farm is located on Bayou Courtableau in St. Landry Parish.
“Chene” is French for oak.
A majestic live oak is on the southwest corner of our farm
and is estimated to be over 200 years old.
We started with registered Katahdin in 1998.
We
now have 2 unrelated rams and have 26 registered ewes.
Our goal is to continue to grow in number and to eventually
utilize the entire 55 acres that we own.
Presently 30 acres are not fenced.
I
am a KHSI member (1998) and a SCKA member.
From the regional associations beginning, I served as vice
president for 2 years and president for 2 years.
It has been an honor and a privilege to serve this very
active group of Katahdin breeders.
Membership is increasing, and that speaks volumes.
My wife, Loretta, and I will continue to support SCKA and
serve Katahdin breeders with honesty and respect. We are still
learning as we go. Our
purpose and position is to select outstanding individuals and to
promote quality-breeding stock.
Selection and upgrading are the keys to success. We are
promoting registered breeding lambs for 4-H and FFA members to
show. This is an area
that we (Katahdin breeders) need to channel our efforts. This will give the public the awareness to the potential and
the excellent characteristics of Katahdin.
Bayou
Chene Farm is also enrolled in the voluntary SCRAPIE program (LA
#13). Visitors are
always welcome on the “BAYOU”
