President's Message

I want to start by saying a little about the KHSI Annual meeting this past September in Pipestone, Minnesota. Thank you to Dr. Kennedy, his wife Deb, and the entire staff at Pipestone Veterinary Clinic, for a fantastic program. I especially enjoyed the farm tours on Thursday. A lot of difference between the way farming is done up there, and the way we do it down here. I have only one regret about that trip, I didn't take a camera.

It is time to start making plans for the SCKA Annual meeting for 2012. It is scheduled to be held June 8th and 9th at Rose Hill Farms, in Folsom, LA. I have not been to this site yet, but I have been told that it is a gorgeous facility, and I am looking forward to being there.

As this year draws to a close, it is time to renew your membership. Memberships that are renewed, or new memberships that are paid in Nov and Dec of 2011, will be for the year 2012. Remember this:

MEMBERSHIP DUES THAT ARE PAID AFTER JANUARY 31ST WILL BE $25.00!!! Save $5.00, renew early. It will save you money, save stress (on our underpaid, but very much appreciated Treasurer), and make it a lot easier to keep our web page updated.

Don't forget, we still have the contest going that will give a free membership to the person that sponsors the most new members. If you sell some sheep, or talk to a prospective buyer, get them to join the SCKA, and list you as their sponsor. It's as easy as that. If you know someone who used to be a member, but has been inactive for at least two years, get them to rejoin and list as a new member. The demand for good Katahdin sheep is increasing, the price we are getting for them is increasing, it stands to reason our membership should be increasing. If everyone will sponsor one new member this year, our association will double in size.

Thank You,
John Cannon

Promotions Report - Mark Dennis

Sara and I are excited having just returned from a few days in New Orleans. We are looking forward to Thanksgiving with family andthen on our yearly cruise. Life is good, even when you are old! Being a Katahdin Breeder in recent years has been good, and looking even better all of the time.

We attended the USDA-ARS Sheep & Goat Field Day in Booneville AK in October. This gathering is really a nice time, so much new information is presented about sheep & goats. The folks, food, and fellowship are very rewarding. We displayed the SCKA booth with members cards, pictures, brochures, and we even had Katahdins on display. The Sale of Sheep, provided from Dale Bumpers Small Farm Research Center, was cancelled. It is rescheduled for Dec. 10, 2011. For more information about the up and coming Sheep Sale (Mostly Katahdin blood line) contact Dr. Joan Burke 479-675-3834. SCKA President John & Mitzie Cannon, and Sara and I made our annual pilgrimage to the Sunbelt Expo in Moultrie, GA in October. We talked Katahdin’s for three days. SCKA brochures, cards, and the SCKA Aug. newsletter were available for the taking.

Very soon we will be changing the way SCKA presents your websites. The listing order will change every time you update your website. You will be first/top of the list. We are going to this procedure to encourage those Katahdin breeders who have websites to keep their website current. We have a few folks who have not updated or changed their pictures for years, remember good pictures and up to date information will sell your Katahdins fast. The SCKA has recently designed new website for member J.B. Pitts visit www.pittskalathdin.com and check it out.

You may want to plan early for the 2012 SCKA Annual Gathering/Meeting/Private Treaty Sale, June 8-9 2012, hosted by “Rose Hill Farms” Folson, LA. Come pass a good time and enjoy Katahdin fellowship, bring those Good Katahdins they will sell themselves. The SCKA 2011 Private Treaty Sale sold over $25,000.00 worth of good Katahdins.

I’m still looking for that SCKA member to step forward and assume the Promotions gag….

Have a awesome “Holiday Season.” We are all blessed to live in America. Please Renew your SCKA membership in January and set a new goal in 2012 to dedicate more time to promoting your flock, it pays large dividends & pleasure! If we can assist you in anywayjust call on us!

Marketing Report - Mark Dennis

Hello Katahdin Breeders, Here in Louisiana the 2011 breeding season was complete on Nov.1, 2011. I look for high numbers oflambs born this coming year in the south. On Sept.1 a cool front arrived just as the 2011 The Old Farmer’s Almanac forecasted, “a cool fall.”

I recently visited SCKA member, Bobbie Golden’s website www.Goldenacresranch.com. Bobbie is now marketing another new idea - Katahdins & Goats to clear growth areas before frost in the Florida panhandle - Great Marketing!

I have been told by one Katahdin Breeder that is taking orders for his 2012 lambs that he is not pricing them until Spring 2012. He believes that the price on lambs will follow cattle prices up in 2012 due to drought in the Southwest.

KHSI held a Great Expo Gathering/Expo Sale at Pipestone, MN. in September. It was hosted by Dr. Kennedy of Pipestone Veterinary Clinic and Crew. Thank Ewe for your hospitality and for the valuable information presented. The Expo Sale is increasing in numbers of good Katahdins available at the Sale. A total of 81 Katahdins were sold for a total of $66,750.00, the average lot price was $824.00. 32 Registered Rams sold for a total of $21,000.00, the average lot price was $656.00. 39 Registered Ewes sold for a total of $25,775.00, the average lot price was $661.00.

10 pens totaling 35 Katahdin Commercial Ewes sold for a total of $19,975.00 with the average pen price of $1,998.00 or $588.00 ea.. What surprised me the most at the sale was that the Commercial Katahdin Yearling Ewes exposed pen of 5 sold for $6,500.00, $1,300.00 ea. Someone tell me commercial yearling ewes are not in demand! I believe the 2012 KHSI Expo Sale in Wooster Ohio will be even larger, plan now to have your Katahdins in the 2012 Expo Sale - I know I will!
