Katahdin sheep are an easy breed to raise.  We wanted to showcase our Youth participants and congratulate them on their excellent efforts raising Katahdins.  Please send your photos and information to our Promotion & Web Content contact (email at the bottom of the page) to have your Youth included. 2018 SCKA Private Treaty Sale

and Annual Meeting

The 2018 SCKA private treaty sale and meeting will be held at the Silver Creek Equestrian Club in Vicksburg, Miss. and hosted by the Board of Directors and Elected Officials. The meeting will be held on June 8th and 9th. The lineup of speakers will be Kathy Kieffer, our promotions director, to go over our new website and assist if you need anything, Mark Dennis to help you with taking pictures (Facebook shows us some need it), Chris Sweat to talk about marketing, and Kipp Brown with Mississippi State University Extension Service will do a PowerPoint and training on how to do Famacha. He will also have Famacha kits for sale at $10 per kit. Any members from other Katadhin organizations are welcome to come and enjoy the presentation and meal. The fun begins around 5:30pm on Friday the 8th with a Dutch treat supper at the Beechwood Restaurant at Exit 5B.  Then on Saturday the 9th we will gather at the riding club beginning at 8am with coffee, sweets and donuts, and after lunch we will have a member's meeting. Therefore, plan to attend and have a great day. Health papers are required, and if you have pens, please bring them as it would be deeply appreciated. You can start unloading sheep at noon on Friday the 8th. Bring your lawn chairs. Directions: I-20 east or west exit 11@Bovina, and follow signs. We will be putting up signs on Friday morning.  Silver Creek Riding Club will be on the right side of the road,  (caution GPS will lead you past the center) she has a big sign over the driveway and a wooden fence along the road. There is also 4 camper spaces at the facility. There are a lot of motels, go to trivago.com or booking.com and get that good rate. Book early. Hope to see you there.

2017 SCKA Annual Meeting

The South Central Katahdin Association gathered in Hope, AR, for their Annual Meeting June 9 and 10, hosted by Jesse Duckett and Chris Sweat. Friday nights activities included a viewing of the animals for the Private Treaty Sale, a lamb burger supper followed by Alan Fulham, Coordinator of the Let’s Grow Sheep Program of the American Sheep Industry. We had 75 people in attendance from 9 states. Saturday’s activities included a host of speakers about the sheep industry. Our first speaker was Mr. Rick Stott, CEO of Superior Farms Co., Davis, California and Denver, Colorado. Mr. Stott showed us thru a series of graphs the ups and downs of the availability of lambs during the months of June, July and August and that their facility needed more lambs during that time. Next, we had Rusty Burgett, National Sheep Improvement Program, speak to us about this program. Our final speaker was Lynn Fahrmeier, President of KHSI talking about the upcoming Expo in Greenfield, IN. On Saturday afternoon we had our Annual Meeting. SCKA had a busy year in 2016-2017, we have new logos, have a brand new webmaster and website (still the same name) hair- sheep.com, elected to purchase the t-shirts for the youth at the Dr. Boyd Show in Sedalia, Mo. Several committees were formed to report back to the membership next year. Meeting Adjourned. Now, we just need a host for the 2018 Annual Meeting if anyone is interested in hosting please contact a Board Member.
